This paper establishes what the fraternity structure was like at Gettysburg College during Gordon Haaland\u27s presidency. Between 1990 and 2004, we explore the roaring party dynamic that was continually threatened by the administration and examine how the switch to sophomore rush tried to tame it. With testimonies from fraternity brothers during this era we try to capture the good, bad, and ugly of fraternity life. While Haaland\u27s administration did not get ride of the fraternity system, it certainly made it safer and reigned it in significantly

This research reviews the early life of Queen Victoria and through analysis of her sequestered childhood and lack of parental figures explains her reliance later in life on mentors and advisors. Additionally, the research reviews previous biographical portrayals of the Queen and refutes the claim that she was merely a receptacle for the ideas of the men around her while still acknowledging and explaining her dependence on these advisors

MS-233: Papers of Theta Chi

The material in this collection documents the foundation of the Star and Crescent Club, its assimilation into a national fraternity, and the financial and social ventures of the fraternity through the early 1990s. Illustrated in papers, blueprints, photo albums, and clothing, this collection is interesting not only for Theta Chi brothers curious about the history of their organization at Gettysburg, but for anyone wishing to follow the development of fraternity culture at Gettysburg since the middle of the 20th century. In addition to the materials housed in Special Collections, donor Jeff Glisson also intends to send related materials to Theta Chi National. These materials include various meeting minutes from 1963 to 1989, an historian’s book chronicling from 1952 to 1978, issues of The Deltacron, Articles of Incorporation, responsibility lists for vice president and secretary, and rush brochures from the 1960s and 1970s. Special Collections and College Archives Finding Aids are discovery tools used to describe and provide access to our holdings. Finding aids include historical and biographical information about each collection in addition to inventories of their content. Here all seems security and peace! : How Brookeville, Maryland Became United States Capital for a Day

When the British burned Washington D.C. during the War of 1812, the city’s civilians and officials fled to the surrounding countryside to escape the carnage. Fearful that the attack on the Capital could eventually spell defeat and worried for their city, these refugees took shelter in the homes and fields of Brookeville, Maryland, a small, Quaker mill town on the outskirts of Washington. These pacifist residents of Brookeville hosted what could have been thousands of Washingtonians in the days following the attack, ensuring the safety of not only the people of Washington, but of President Madison himself. As hosts to the President, the home of a prominent couple stood in for the President’s House, and as the effective center of command for the government, the town was crowned Capital of the United States for a day. This paper hopes to expound upon the history of this event, focusing on the Quaker community that rose so charitably to the challenge. Through an examination of primary sources, digitized archival materials, and previous research, this is a history of Brookeville as it was in August 1814, a tribute to its people and an acknowledgement of its importance

Coding of the Reach Vector in Parietal Area 5d

Competing models of sensorimotor computation predict different topological constraints in the brain. Some models propose population coding of particular reference frames in anatomically distinct nodes, whereas others require no such dedicated subpopulations and instead predict that regions will simultaneously code in multiple, intermediate, reference frames. Current empirical evidence is conflicting, partly due to difficulties involved in identifying underlying reference frames. Here, we independently varied the locations of hand, gaze, and target over many positions while recording from the dorsal aspect of parietal area 5. We find that the target is represented in a predominantly hand-centered reference frame here, contrasting with the relative code seen in dorsal premotor cortex and the mostly gaze-centered reference frame in the parietal reach region. This supports the hypothesis that different nodes of the sensorimotor circuit contain distinct and systematic representations, and this constrains the types of computational model that are neurobiologically relevant

Metformin use in pregnancy: promises and uncertainties

Metformin has been prescribed in pregnancy for over 40 years; for much of this time, use has been limited both in numbers and geographically, and the evidence base has been confined to observational studies. In early years, perceived safety concerns and lack of availability of the drug in many countries acted as a barrier to use. More recently, RCTs have begun to examine the role of metformin in pregnancy in much-needed detail. However, this evidence base has been interpreted differently in different countries, leading to very wide variation in its current application in pregnancy. In this short review, we will discuss the history of metformin in pregnancy and highlight some of the key clinical trials. We will then consider some of the remaining controversies associated with metformin use in pregnancy, most important of these being the potential for long-term ‘programming’ effects on the fetus as a result of metformin being able to cross the placenta. We will also consider clinical situations where metformin might be avoided. Finally, we will discuss some future directions for this drug as it reaches its sixtieth anniversary

Peatland Training Programme – Part 1

This peatland training programme consists of published documents, Powerpoints and 3D animations that are almost all accessible through the University of East London Open Access Repository, specifically within my section of that repository, or via the IUCN UK Peatland Programme website, so all material is freely available and can be accessed at any time, individually or in any order. There is one link right at the end to a commercially-operated website, though the link provided is an open-access link. We are exploring, however, the potential for bringing this link in-house, so this link may change in time and we will update this if and when this happens. The programme set out here is suggested as a means of establishing a logical learning curve, introducing key peatland concepts, then moving on to the implications of these for peatland policy, and finally offering more in-depth information about certain topics. The programme does not seek to be comprehensive in terms of addressing all aspects of peatland science, policy and practice, but does aim to focus on key issues relevant to the UK while also offering insights into the wider European or global perspective. Further topic areas, or topics in more depth, will be addressed in due course as more training materials are created. Their availability will be flagged on the IUCN UK Peatland Programme website as well as appearing in my UEL Repository

Despite growing recognition that peatlands are important on the local, regional and global scale, peatlands within the EU continue to face a number of significant challenges, so in this talk I want to take you to the Eiffel Tower, explore the utermost depths of the ocean, highlight the perils of the new normal, dive into the heart of the atom, review one of the biggest intelligence disasters of the 20th Century, discuss an identity crisis affecting the fundamental scientific method, delve into scientific incest, ask whether the universe has an ironic sense of humour, and I may even touch on peatlands
